Cloud-based accounting software maker FreshBooks plans to release the FreshBooks Card Reader to help small business owners get paid on-the-spot using their mobile device while also combating credit card fraud. Scheduled for release in the spring of 2016, the pocket-sized device plugs into an iPhone’s audio jack and lets users accept credit cards anywhere.
The FreshBooks Card Reader is fully integrated into FreshBooks’ payments offering and accounting software for the Web and iOS devices, so invoices and reports are automatically updated as payments are processed. It offers the latest security technology and features dual chip-and-swipe capability, allowing users to accept EMV chip cards while protecting sensitive credit card data. The Card Reader will also be supported by FreshBooks’ award-winning customer support team.
“Running your own business has all kinds of challenges, but getting paid shouldn’t be one of them,” said Mike McDerment, co-founder and CEO, FreshBooks. “Since day one, FreshBooks has been committed to helping service-based small business owners save time, get paid faster, and look professional, and the FreshBooks Card Reader is the next step as we continue delivering on our promise. Seventy-five (75) percent of small businesses already use mobile devices to run their businesses, and the FreshBooks Card Reader will offer them with yet another way to streamline their workflow while on-the-go.”
Unlike standalone card readers that must be separately connected to invoicing or accounting software, the FreshBooks Card Reader seamlessly integrates into the FreshBooks platform and is ready to use right away. Users are able to offer their clients the option to pay by credit card in person, and payments are processed in less than 60 seconds. Credit card information is encrypted and the data is not stored on the device.
“The whole integration together is really what makes this great,” said FreshBooks customer, Leslie Lipps, Marketing Consultant. “It’s already built in with what I use every day – invoices, estimates, and expenses. When my clients are ready to pay, I can easily just open my phone, accept the credit card payment on the spot, and know that my FreshBooks records will be automatically updated. It’s also great for my clients who prefer to pay me in person instead of online. The convenience of using the FreshBooks Card Reader adds an extra personal touch and enhances my professional presentation.”
“The FreshBooks Card Reader integrates seamlessly with FreshBooks and it saves me a lot of time,” said FreshBooks customer, Morgan Peterman, veterinarian. “My reports are updated automatically, and my clients are amazed at how quickly and easily I can accept payments using my phone. On top of that, the Card Reader also brings a heightened level of professionalism to the way I present myself.”
Powered by FreshBooks Payments, users can accept Visa, MasterCard and Amex cards from their clients. The Card Reader is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch devices running iOS 8 or newer and the latest version of the FreshBooks iOS app.
The FreshBooks Card Reader will be available in the spring of 2016 in the U.S. for $29 USD and includes a one-year warranty through FreshBooks.
